Lost in Translation: The Palazzo Puzzle

When is a palace not a palace?

Palazzo Gondi

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Palazzo Gondi in Florence.

As a project manager for an events company, I was on the lookout for unique locations to include in my reports. One such location was Palazzo Gondi, which presented an intriguing question for my report, aimed at an American and British audience.

The question was: How can I accurately translate the word 'palazzo' into English without misleading the readers?

For instance, if I translated it as 'palace', English speakers might immediately think of a grand palace like Buckingham Palace, which would certainly not convey the intended meaning.

Let's examine some alternatives.

7 Ways to Say 'Palazzo' in English

The easiest answer would be to simply mention 'Palazzo Gondi' in my report. However, an English speaker may well just translate this to ‘palace’.

Here are some English words that can be used for 'palazzo'.

Palace

A large residence which is the official home of a king, queen, or other person of high social rank.

"The event will be held at the historic palace in the city centre."

This could be used in my report, but people in the UK have a much grander idea of a palace, like Buckingham Palace or Kensington Palace.

Kensington Palace

Mansion

A large, stately private house. Mansions can be rural or urban.

"We've secured this elegant Renaissance mansion for the corporate reception."

I think this would be a reasonably accurate word to use for Palazzo Gondi.

A mansion in Surrey, United Kingdom

Noble residence

A grand house that belonged to aristocratic families, often with historical significance.

"The former noble residence offers authentic period rooms for exclusive events."

This captures both the grandeur and historical importance of Palazzo Gondi.

Stately Home

A large and impressive old house that often has land and can sometimes be visited by the public. Stately homes are usually found in rural or suburban areas.

"This magnificent stately home provides a perfect backdrop for luxury events."

Palazzo Gondi has some of the features of a stately home, such as family history, interesting artefacts and furniture, but is in the centre of Florence - a very urban area.

Chatsworth House

Manor House

A large old house in the country with land belonging to it.

"The wedding reception will take place at the historic manor house."

Not suitable for Palazzo Gondi because there is no land and it is not in the country.

Manor house, Cotswolds, United Kingdom

Building

A structure with walls and a roof, such as a house or a factory.

"The meeting is scheduled in the historic building on Main Street."

This word is far too general to use in my context, but it does work in other situations.

Apartment Building

A large building that is divided into apartments.

"The former palace now serves as a luxury apartment building."

This is not suitable for Palazzo Gondi.
